Random Moment

Realization of the day (if you can imagine working in a healthcare setting, you can understand the feeling):

Awkward-- having a someone pass by a patient's room that you are working in and have them smile and wave at you, and you smile back while continuing with your task only to realize a few seconds after they disappear that you have a mask on, and they never could see your smile.

Thought of the Day

Higher Expectations?

I found this sign posted on the women's restroom in the science building at SUU. Most people would just see the normal symbol dotting the restrooms of women around the country, but notice how skinny the hips are on this relatively newer sign. Is this indicative of a new, higher expectation for women in today's society, where event the cartoon woman on the door of a restroom has to have a skinnier waste?

New Adventures

This last few weeks have contained a few of the biggest changes in my life thus far. Not only am I now actually employed as a phlebotomist, but I'm working at one of the biggest hospitals in the Intermountain Healthcare system, living in a larger metropolitan area (a very large change from living in a town whose population was 500 for the last 20 years of my life), and the only places I've been in the week since I've been here are work, WalMart, institute, and church. I miss my friends and family, but I'm so happy with my new job.

Work:
McKay-Dee hospital is my new place of employment, and I work with some of the coolest people in the world! My manager goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is taken care of and lets you know she cares. Por ejemplo, a couple days ago I called her to ask a question about work the next day, a simple question that would only have taken a couple seconds to answer, but after she answered my question she asked me how my training was going, asked how the trainers were doing and told me if there is anything I need or any questions I have about anything that I am welcome to talk to her about it. She made sure my needs were taken care of and made me feel like one of the regulars, despite being the "new guy." She also let me know that she will help me out for as long as it takes for me to get comfortable with everything before letting me do things on my own, instead of giving me a deadline that I have to know everything by. And everyone else is just awesome. Large variety of people, and we all have a good time.
Before taking the job I was a little worried that once I started poking people I would get sick or faint (which has happened before), and the first day one of the first patients I watched being stuck made me kinda woozy, but a couple hours later after I successfully poked my trainer I started poking actual patients, and it was just like falling off a bicycle (you never forget how). I started off slowly, making several mistakes but since then I've begun to get faster and work smoother, and I was even able to relocate a couple of missed attempts on the second day that I wouldn't have been able to manage the first day, so my trainer didn't have to take over those ones, which was really exciting for me. It gave me a big boost of confidence, and I now feel like I may be able to successfully do this job after all :)

Social Life:
As of right now, I have none. Having gone from having tons of friends to call to do something when I'm bored, I now have no one to call to do something that doesn't live at least 30 minutes away (in SLC), so my weeknights are full of boredom and sleep, sometimes a movie. I went to "Institute" Thursday night and met a few people, but still haven't really connected with anyone. Despite this I have three people trying to set me up with three completely different guys (and I have a feeling that nothing's going to come of any of them...).
Dating:
When I went to Institute this last week I walked in the door and wanted to walk right back out when I found out the topic was "Finding and Becoming an Eternal Companion." It is definitely the most (over)used topic within the world of being single. Despite not wanting to stay I did anyway. Throughout the lesson I figured a few things out about myself--
-I am too selfish for anyone to want to date/marry me at this point in time, and before I get to the point where I want to get married I need to become a more selfless person
-I have been told to be very picky about who I date and consider marrying, but there is a fine line between good picky-ness and expectations that no living being is able to live up to. Now it's trying to figure where one ends and the other begins.

I guess the fact that I never post anything reveals to you just how my life goes... I am super busy! This week is the last week before official Finals (with a capital F) so obviously this is the time when the professors like to pile on the homework and final projects and whatever and whatnot; then there is no school for the rest of the summer... at least for most other people. I, on the other hand, have one class left before I finish my Associates degree so guess who gets to take a May-mester? That's right, me! Wanna hang out? Wait until June....

One Year Older, and Wiser Too

Ok, you must forgive me; it's been a year since I posted anything.
Life is much the same as it was a year ago, but now I have a year of college under my belt, and I've finally decided to major in Nursing at SUU.
My newest and most exciting decision is to audition for a performing mission in Nauvoo next summer :) I get a huge adrenaline rush just thinking about it!
